Intaka Island is a 16 hectare bird sanctuary in the heart of Century City (near Canal Walk) and is home to 120 species of birds (70 are seen regularly) and 177 species of indigenous plants. Most of the birds are (predictably) waterbirds
There is a 2km self-guided walk around the area from which visitors can view sanctuary at their own pace. There are 9 educational stations along the trail offering more information on what you are seeing. There are also guided tours on offer for those who would like more information.
There is a heronry on this route which offers to opportunity to check out the breeding birds.
- Because of its proximity to Canal Walk, Intaka is a good add-on to a trip out to the mall
- Be sure to check on the heronry to see the breeding birds.
Intaka Island is at Century City and near to Canal Walk. You need to drive around Canal Walk to get to the sanctuary
- Take the N1 towards Paarl
- Take the Exit 10, Sable Road offramp and follow Century Drive signs
- Take Century Drive offramp and head up the hill towards the robots (airfield on the left)
- At the traffic lights turn left and continue between the airfield
and Ratanga Junction (you will see the rollercoaster on your right) - There will be a sharp right
- Go through two sets of traffic lights and then take the third right into Century Boulevard
- Go right at the traffic circle and then turn left toward the sanctuary
First Visit to Intaka Island
Thursday 12th August 2010: Excellent Guide made it a most enjoyable outing for Panorama's Senior Club- most of whom had not even heard about this sanctuary in Cape Town. Beautiful Day..many birds, and the canal trip was most interesting.
A very good educational outing for both young and old....and they even provide binoculars.. WOW!!!
