R24 for the toll

1 to 3.5 hours

Chapmans Peak is one of Cape Town's most famous mountains because there is a beautiful cliff-top road running along the mountain with amazing views of Hout Bay and the mountains. However, Chapmans Peak is also a fairly easy hike offering even better views than the road.

There are several starting points, but all involve getting onto Chapmans Peak Drive first. There is a path heading up the mountain from the East Fort before the toll gate but that is a long route and not recommended for most.

Drive through the toll gate and continue until you see a parking area on your left (there is a little slip road) and a sign showing the start of the hike. The hike itself moves quickly up the mountain via a steep path which is pretty well maintained. Although the hike is steep, there is no getting lost and it is over fairly quickly.

When you level out near the top turn right and continue towards Noordhoek along a slowly rising path. You will move over and around the minor peak and eventually come to the rocky summit of Chapmans Peak.

The views from the summit are simply amazing with Hout Bay, Noordhoek Beach, Kommetjie, Fish Hoek, Noordhoek and even Table Mountain all clearly visible on a clear day.

Tips
  • Ensure that you have enough water and food with you. This is a relatively easy hike, but there is water available on the mountain

  • Most people would get onto Chapmans Peak drive from Hout Bay (it is clearly marked and visible from Hout Bay)
  • Drive through the toll gates and continue up the hill
  • Well before the highest point in the road there is a parking area on the left (look out for the little slip road)
  • The hike moves up the mountain from this parking area
