In 1965 the Apartheid government deemed the vibrant but non-white community in District Six to be unwanted and forcibly removed 60,000 people to create a 'whites only' area. The District Six museum is dedicated to educating visitors about this historic community and its tragic end.

The museum itself is fairly small, but is packed with artifacts, paintings, photos, and other exhibits illustrating what life was like in District Six before the forced relocation. There is plenty of supplementary information and the staff is eager to provide more information if required.

Although there is a lot of information on offer, this museum is fairly small and can be seen fairly quickly.

Getting There

The District Six Museum is on Buitenkant Street across the road from the police station - on your left it you are heading up the hill.
