The SA National Gallery is one of South Africa's premier art museums. It is located in the historic and beautiful company gardens in central Cape Town. The exhibitions change fairly regularly, but visitors can expect to find paintings, works on paper, photography, sculpture, beadwork, textiles and architecture. Details about current and upcoming exhibitions are available on the website (see link above).

The building itself is made up of several large rooms and a small curio shop. It is normally fairly quiet and visitors are free to roam through the rooms at their will.

Tips
  • Note that entrance is free on most public holidays (not on religious holidays like Easter or Xmas)
  • The National Gallery is very close to several other Iziko museums and is a 2 minute walk from the planetarium and the natural history museum

Getting There

The SA National Gallery is in the company gardens so you have to walk a little to get there. You can easily access the company gardens from Orange, Adderley or Queen Victoria Streets

  • Get onto Orance Street heading away from Gardens towards Lions Head
  • Just before the road joins Kloof and Long Streets there is a right turn into Queen Victoria Street
  • Park as close to the top of this road as possible
  • The company gardens are on your right
  • As you enter the company gardens you will see the National Gallery up ahead (see picture in the main article)
