The Mowbray Ridge/Knifes Edge route up Devils Peak is popular but relatively unused. The route begins at the Kings Block House and climbs steeply up Mowbray Ridge before moving along the Knifes Edge and then around to the minor summit of Devils Peak.

This route is very steep and exposed in places and should not be attempted unless you are experience and/or with someone who knows the route. There is some scrambling up the steep rocks above the Block House which can be tricky for the less experienced. Some sections of the path have steep drop offs - this may intimidate those who are afraid of heights.

Route
The path begins in the trees just above the Kings Block House (you can hike up to the Block House from Rhodes Memorial). The path rises steeply up Mowbray Ridge and some scrambling is required to get up the rocks. The path is fairly clear so if you find that the path isn't visible retrace your steps to find it again. There are dangerous sections along this route so be careful.

As the path rises up Mowbray Ridge you will come across an old and (mostly) abandoned watch house with stunning views of both Table Bay and False Bay. You're almost at the Knife Edge where the path traverses the top of the ridge with drop offs on both sides and great views.

Once you have walked along the Knife Edge the path moves along the face of Devils Peak to the right. There is some rising as the path takes your around the face of Devils Peak - this is a great section of the hike with good views and a path hugging the mountain.

Once the path has moved around the mountain and you are looking down into the City Bowl it will swing left and up towards the minor peak (a little false summit facing the city). The path pops out onto the top and you can look over Table Mountain and down into the Saddle. From here take a left to the summit of Devils Peak which is visible a short distance away.

Tips
  • Remember that hiking on Table Mountain is dangerous so be careful. This route is fairly exposed and not as well utilized so make sure you are not alone.
