The Kings Block House is a historical site on Devils Peak. The Block
House (basically a fort) was built at this point in 1796 by the British
as a defensive and lookout position. Because of it's location the Block
House is able to see False Bay and signal to the Castle.
The site
itself in pretty bad shape as its isolated position has led to some
vandalism. However, it is an interesting point to hike towards with
great views.
The Block House is on the contour path which
extends in both directions - towards Kirstenbosch and towards Table
Mountain. It can therefore be built into many hikes in the area.
Tips
- The walk up to the Kings Block House is pretty long so make sure that you leave enough time to get up and down before dark
- Because it is fairly isolated it may not be safe to be at the Block House alone after dark
Getting There
- The easiest way to get to the Block House is to hike up from Rhodes Memorial
- Once at Rhodes Memorial look out for the path heading up the hill towards the Block House. The path starts at the top left of the parking area
- It's a fairly long walk and pretty steep too. Just follow the signs all the way up
