The annual Gun Run is perhaps Cape Town's best known half-marathon (competing with the Two Oceans Half). The route starts and ends at Hamiltons Rugby Club in Moullie Point. Runners pass through the V&A Waterfront, the CBD, past parliament, Green Point and along the promenade.

The race itself is fairly flat which makes for fast times. The flat, scenic route as well as the fact that the race is so central makes the Gun Run very popular among amateur and novice runners. The 2007 event drew more than 7000 competitors.

The race is started by the firing of the noon gun and the aim is to complete the run before the gun fires again at the cutoff (3 hours later). This is the tradition from which the race garners it's name.

For those who feel that 21km is out of reach there is also a 10km route available.

Tips
  • The starting gun is extremely loud - they move the Noon Gun down from Signal Hill for the start. There are a few screams every time.
