The Kalk Bay theatre is a quaint little theatre (seats 78) and restaurant located in converted old church that was built in 1876. The location and the building make for a homely ambiance.
There is a restaurant in the upstairs section of the theatre which makes a unique combo possible. You can book for the show alone, or you can book for dinner and a show (most people do this). Patrons normally start arriving just before 19:00 and then have dinner till 20:00 when the show starts.
The food is homely and tasty - nothing gourmet but pretty delicious. Generally there is a choice of about 3 options for main course and there is always a vegetarian option. Wine is OK but not particularly cheap and you can take your drinks down into the theatre to enjoy with the show. After the show, if you feel like it you can head back upstairs for dessert and coffee in the restaurant.
Wooden floors, tables and chairs are the order of the day, and you can see the kitchen from your table. There is also an opening in the middle of the restaurant through which patrons can see the theatre filling up below.
Seating in the theatre is on a first come first serve basis, you reserve your seats on arriving, but before dinner. Because the theatre is so small everyone is very close to the action and can see exactly what is going on.
There are a variety of shows on offer and the schedule changes fairly regularly. Tuesday nights are permanently dedicated to Theatre Sports (R100 for dinner and show) and this is a perennial favorite, especially for kids.
Upcoming shows can be view here and currently showing is here
- Take up the dinner and show option - this is a great combo

Kalk Bay Theatre is indeed quaint and I appreciate all venues that support the arts, however I've tried the dinner and show combo several times and I have to say that the food is terrible. Whether you have the 3 course meal or the cheaper pasta option, they are both bad.
Having said that, it has been several months since my last visit so maybe things have improved. There was also an issue with the owner's treatment of some patrons, which was mentioned in a comment on my site.
