The Milkwood Half Marathon is run annually in Kommetjie. The route is undulating and very scenic as it moves along the coast near Kommetjie. Starting at the Soetwater recreational area the course takes runners through Kommetjie, past the lighthouse, up the long hill of Slangkop and then along the Misty Cliffs to Scarborough before returning to the start.

The run is relatively fast, and is popular because of the beautiful route. There are some hills but nothing crazy and good times are available. There is also a 10km and 5km run for those not quite up to the full 21.1km.

At this finish indigenous plants are handed out to those who are willing to plant them in their gardens.

Tips
  • Click here to view a detailed and interactive map of the route (including profile)
  • There are some hills in this race which should be taken into account. The first hill is from about 4km to 5.5km and is quite a slog. The one to watch out for is the long gentle rise from about 16km to 18km
  • For those who are less keen or able, don't forget about the shorter 10km course

Milkwood 10K 2010

5

Having come down to South Africa on a business trip, I had scoured the internet for something to do on my day off, Sunday 9th May, and came across the Milkwood 10K (I am not up to doing a 1/2 at the moment). Whilst I have never been to South Africa before, this race appealed to me, and after a brief exchange of emails with the ever so helpful organiser, Carl, I decided to give it a go. I just managed to get to the start of the race from my hotel in Cape Town, the Vineyard (lovely), and legged it to the start, with just enough time to reset my watch before the gun went. I thoroughly enjoyed the course, tough but majestic, and happened to finish at the same time as the winner of the 1/2 marathon, who must have done 1:09 ish, as I managed 54 minutes and he started 15 minutes before me. I do not think that anyone was fooled as a tried to run in alongside him...

Anyway, a cracking race, and thanks to all the marshalls and organisers. Hope you made lots for your cause.

Graeme
