1-3 hours

Lions head is by far the easiest of the three famous peaks to climb, and is for that reason extremely popular – even at night! The path begins at the top of Kloofnek and winds all the way around the mountain itself on the way up. This means that you will have views of the City Bowl, Table Mountain, Robben Island, Clifton, Camps Bay and Signal Hill (the Lion’s rump).

The beginning of the hike is a jeep track (don’t worry only walkers and the occasional runner) up the South-Western face. The jeep track eventually turns into a path which circles all the way around towards the summit. Fairly close to the top you have a choice of climbing some easy chains (recommended for all but the least confident) or walking around on a slightly longer route. After the chains the climb becomes fairly steep up to the summit where there is a paved area and more stunning views.

The climb up and down can easily be achieved in 3 hours and people regularly do it in under 1 hour. The paths are well maintained and sign posted.

Tips
  • Don't be intimidated by the chains - they are easy and make the climb memorable
  • This climb is fairly easy so it is popular at night when the moon is full and the views truly amazing

Getting There
  • Turn towards Lions Head from the top of Kloofnek (Kloofnek is the road that passes between Lions Head and Table Mountain)
  • Drive up the road towards Lions Head - there is a parking area about 200m up this road and a little Parks Board hut
  • The start of the hike path heads off towards the left

Nice sunset!

That photo bares a startling resemblance to one I took: http://www.flickr.com/photos/andyweb/2098959816/ ...I'm flattered ;)

Otherwise nice lil' hike with fantastic views, just don't leave it too late if it's threatening to be cloudy even when full moon ...I had a fun experience where my descent was illuminated via cell phone light!
