Monday to Saturday: 11:00 - 13:00
The famous Noon Gun on Signal Hill has been fired every day (except Sundays and public holidays) since 1902 and has now been fired over 63,000 times! Visitors are welcome to watch the firing of the gun which happens daily at 12:00 sharp.
A little before noon an officer arrives with a powder bag and carefully loads the gun. Once that is done these guys are more than happy to explain the history and other details of the firing to visitors. At exactly noon the cannon is triggered by an electric trigger connected to an atomic clock - you don't get much more accurate.
The little charge is extremely loud and you can feel as well as hear the gun firing. The Noon Gun is easily audible from much of the city and is quite a Cape Town tradition.
- Make sure that you leave enough time to get down to the Lions Batter before the Noon Gun is fired at 12:00 sharp
- The gun is VERY loud, be sure to protect your ears when it fires
- The Lions Battery from which the Noon Gun is fired is about a 15-20 minute walk down from the Signal Hill parking area.
- Drive up Kloofnek and at the top turn towards Lions Head
- Continue all the way to the end of this road until you read the parking area on top of Signal Hill
- Now head back across the road you just drove up and onto the path heading down the hill
- Keep left at the fork and continue on to the Lions Battery
