Silvermine Nature Reserve is located at the top of Ou Kaapseweg between Muizenberg and Noordhoek. The reserve is split by the road and Silvermine West is the larger and more popular section offering beautiful surroundings and plenty of activities.
There is a beautiful, if chilly, dam very near to the parking area which is the destination for many a picnic. Braais (barbeques) are allowed when the fire risk is low and picnicking all around the dam is popular.
There are several hiking routes on offer from Silvermine West. You can hike along the Silvermine loop to Noordhoek peak from which you can take in the amazing views of Long beach, Hout Bay and Chapmans Peak. Note that the Silvermine loop is also popular among mountain bikers - although it is steep at points. You could also take the easy hike to Elephants Eye from the car park.
Silvermine is part of the Table Mountain National Park and home to a large variety of plant, bird and small animal species. Most of the hikes available are fairly easy and this is a good spot for those after only gentle hikes.
- Head out of Cape Town on the M3 towards Muizenberg
- At the end of the road (T-junction) turn right and head up the hill
- Follow the signs to Fishhoek - go through a set of traffic lights on the way up the hill before the road curves to the right
- Turn left onto Ou Kaapse Weg and head up the mountain
- At the top of the hill you will see Silvermine signposted on your right
- Silvermine West is on your right (when coming from Cape Town) and you need to pay at the office
- Carry on up this road until you can go no further and the parking area is visible
