R200 for individuals (R160 with Wildcard)
R300 for teams (R260 with Wildcard)
2-4 hours
The 2008 event is on Saturday 21 June
The Old Fisherman's Trail Challenge is a trail running race between Hout Bay and Fish Hoek. The race begins and ends on the beach but includes climbing over the mountains (Kalk Bay, Silvermine and Blackburn Ravine) between these suburbs - at least 650m vertically!
The route is very beautiful and provides for some awesome views of the respective bays from up in the mountains. The starting and ending points alternate between Hout Bay and Fish Hoek to provide variety. The total distance is about 22km with the record standing at just under 2 hours.
Runners can enter as individuals or as two-person relay teams - the changeover is at the Silvermine dam. There is a focus on runner safety so all participants are required to be completely self-sufficient. Everyone must carry water, food, wet weather clothing, mobile phone, etc.
Because the impact on the nature reserves must be managed the number of participants is limited and entries for the 2008 event were gone within hours!
A detailed race report for the 2006 run from Hout Bay to Fish Hoek can be read here
- Entries for the 2008 event were gone within hours so make sure that you are ready to enter when entries open
- Make sure that you have all of the necessary safety equipment (listed on the site). Not only could you be disqualified for not carrying this equipment, but you may land up needing it!
