Moyo is an enormous outdoor restaurant on the Spier wine estate near Stellenbosch outside Cape Town. It is designed to be both an excellent restaurant and a unique experience. The setting, the entertainment, and the amazing food all work together to make for a wonderful experience - a must for tourists.

The Food
The food itself is a massive African buffet with a lot of different foods on offer - steaks (beef, gemsbok, ostrich and more), game meat, potjies (several), salads (several), fish, breads, calamari, various chicken dishes, various kinds of boerewors, stacks of vegetables and of course a good dessert buffet. All of this food is of course delicious and very well presented - Moyo is a mouth watering experience.

Seating
Diners are seated in Bedouin tents of various sizes that are sprawled over the large area. You have a few options for seating:

  • Main tent: The massive main tent in which the buffet is located. This is also where the shows are put on so don't discount it as an option.
  • Private tents: There are several smaller more private tents in which some tables are located - good for a romantic evening
  • Tree houses: There are a few tables located in tree houses which are accessed using stairs. These are wonderful if the weather is good and add to the experience

Entertainment
Soon after arrival someone will come around to wash you hands with warm water from a ceramic jug. After that another entertainer will come around to paint your face - one of the most popular aspects of Moyo. Don't worry this is subtle and the paint comes off very easily.

Throughout the evening entertainment is going on all around you. There are roving bands of musicians and singers who serenade most tables individually through the evening. In the main tents there is always live music and dancing happening on the stage.

Tips
  • Moyo is extremely popular so booking is essential
  • If you go early enough in the day there is a cheetah sanctuary at the entrance of the restaurant where for a small fee you can get a closer look
  • Book well in advance so that you can try to get a private tent - you can always go into the main tent to watch the shows
  • Try to organize a day with good weather - this is not essential but can add to the experience
