R100 (2008)

4-8 hours (Sat 7 Feb 2009)

The Bat Run is an annual race held on a February night around full moon. The event involves a night run/walk up 3 of Cape Town's most famous mountains - Devils Peak, Table Mountain and Lions Head!

Starting at the Kloofnek parking area at 19h00 racers proceed to the top of Devils Peak. From there its back to the road and then up to the top of Table Mountain (Maclears Beacon). Exhausted competitors are not done yet though because runners still have to proceed Table Mountain before heading up and down Lions Head. The total race distance is about 26km - with a more than 1700m of climbing!

The event is extremely well organised with plenty of facilitators, snacks provided, and a strong emphasis on safety. There are some serious competitors who manage the whole event in around 4 hours, but there is a general fun atmosphere with many runners taking 7+ hours.

Tips
  • This is a long and tough event - make sure that you have enough water and snacks (Gu was a sponsor in 2008)
  • Ensure that you have the necessary safety equipment (head torch, whistle, space blanket, rain gear, etc)
  • Get to know the routes ahead of time. This really helps when trying to find you way around at night
  • Have fun!

Headlamp

Be warned, if the Table Cloth pulls in, a good headlamp and spare batteries is a must!!

Safety Equipment

Don't skimp on the safety equipment and get a good headlamp. You will be very happy you have one if you are flying down Platteklip once the Table Cloth has pulled in.

Headlamp

Yeah, I know a serious competitor in the 2008 race who had to pull out because of a bad headlamp
