Maclear's Beacon is the highest point (1,085m) on Table Mountain - if you haven't been there then you haven't really climbed Table Mountain. The beacon is a large stone cairn placed to mark the highest point on the mountain by Sir Thomas Maclear in 1844. Maclear's Beacon is on the opposite end of the 'table top' from the cable station and is a popular destination for hikers and visitors.

The path from the cable station or Platteklip Gorge is fairly well marked and maintained, but if you don't pay attention it is fairly easy to get slightly lost. Make sure to follow the painted yellow footprints and this route is easy to follow.

The path moves along the top of the mountain and is not very strenuous. It makes a nice excursion for those who have taken the cable car up the mountain. The route is about 4 or 5km (there and back) so enough time should be left. The signs on the mountain recommend 1.5 hours but if you walk quickly the route can be done in considerably less time.

Tips
  • The top of Table Mountain is often misty and enshrouded in the 'tablecloth'.  If this is the case consider skipping the walk as it is easier to get lost and there is less to see.
