Table Mountain is probably the most well known landmark in Cape Town, and definitely one of the most recognizable mountains in the world. There are several enjoyable hikes up the mountain, but for many the cable car is the perfect way to see Table Mountain. Since 1929 more than 18 million people have visited the top of our mountain in this way!

Weather permitting the cable cars run hundreds of tourists up the mountain daily. During the 5-10 minute ride to the summit the car revolves so that everyone gets a view in every direction.

Once at the top there is actually quite a lot to do:

  • There are three different walks of varying length along the top of the mountain.
  • The Table Mountain restaurant operates throughout the day (also no bookings)
  • There is a souvenier shop with public toilets
  • You could even hike back down to the car via Platteklip Gorge!

The cableway doesn't allow bookings ahead of time – you will need to stand in the line on the day of your trip. Also if the weather isn't great you should phone to check that the cable car is operating. Note that this is an extremely popular activity so the lines can get quite long (up to an hour on weekends).

Opening hours vary according to season – you can get more details here.

Fees are also varied (adults, children, students, one-way) – get details here.

Tips
  • If the weather isn't great (wind or cloud) then you should phone to check if the cable car is operating
  • Dont forget to go on one of the hikes on offer at the top - you could even hike back down
