The Table Mountain Challenge is a 35km trail running race around Table Mountain. It is extremely popular, and because there is a relay option even beginners can take part in the event. The route is really beautiful and for any trail runner this is a wonderful event.
Leg 1 starts are the Kloofnek parking lot and moves along the front of Table Mountain towards the Block House on Devils Peak - about 8.6km.
Leg 2 sees runners using the contour path above UCT, Newlands and Kirstenbosch to get to the traffic circle at Constantia Nek - about 10km.
Leg 3 is the tough leg which sees runners crossing Hout Bay and heading up the mountain above Llandudno. From there runners make their way along the top of the stunning Twelve Apostles mountain range before descending onto the pipe track and finishing at the start - about 17km.
The organizers make sure that this is a fun event - in 2007 they were all in high spirits and dressed up as clowns. There is a focus on safety and competitors are expected to have camelbaks, food, warm clothing and other safety gear.
Here is an excellent 10 minute video about the 2007 event that was screened on TV - here. Well worth watching.
Entrants get freebies like T-shirts and running caps with their entry packs.
- Enter early as there is only space for 400 runners (or teams) on the mountain and trail running is becoming increasingly popular
- Try to get some experience of the route ahead of the race itself
