Tafelberg is the road to the Cable Station on Table Moutain but it continues for about 6km along the base of Table Mountain and around the bottom of Devils Peak. At the base of Devils Peak the road is closed to all vehicles so it is popular among walkers, runners and cyclists.

You can park anywhere along the road although it is recommended to start well beyond the busy areas around the cable station. The road then winds along the base of Table Mountain with a few gentle hills and a rise to a high point as it joins Devils Peak.

There are some more hills, some quite steep but all short, as the road winds around the base of Devils Peak. The views all along this route are wonderful: Table Mountain, Lions Head, City Bowl, Table Bay, Robben Island, Northern Suburbs.

Eventually the tar road ends and there are several benches for a quick breather before turning back. For the more adventurous and mountain bikers there is a dirt road that continues around Devils Peak towards the Block House.

There are several pretty waterfalls and ponds along the way. The road isn’t in the best condition and there are points where it is falling away (cordoned off) and where rocks have fallen onto the road (periodically cleared).

Tips
  • Depending how close to the cableway you park the run/cycle/walk can be close to 10km
  • There are some steepish (but very short) hills which make this an interesting run or cycle
