The Vredehoek Quarry is a largely unknown site on lower Devils Peak above the suburb of Vredehoek. The fairly large and disused quarry can be accessed by an old tunnel and has developed a small and still lake at its center.

The quarry is popular as a site for rock climbers, and a good stop on the mountain biking and running tracks which surround it.

Because of its creepy nature (especially at night) and the suggestive signs that the tunnel may collapse 'at any time' the Vredehoek quarry is also an exciting spot to visit - especially at night.

It is possible to walk over the wall of the quarry instead of going through the tunnel. This is a good option if you are a little freaked out by the ominous warning signs. That said, the tunnel has been standing for decades and is highly unlikely to collapse while you are in it!

There are several paths around the quarry for those who are keen to do a little more exploring.

Tips
  • This is an isolated spot, so be aware of your surroundings, especially at night
  • If you are planning on making a night visit remember to take a torch and watch out for low beams inside the tunnel

Getting There

The quarry is most easily reached from Chelmsford Road in Vredehoek - accessible from Derry Street

  • To get to Derry Street get onto De Waal heading towards the city and follow the signs to Nazareth House
  • Continue up Derry Street past the Spar on your right
  • Eventually the road meets Chelmsford and you should take the left fork
  • You will reach a spot where there is parking on the left and the jeep track is up ahead
  • Turn left onto the jeep track and you are a 3 minute walk from the quarry tunnel

Interesting tin mine

There is a great abandoned tin mine in this area that is quite easily accessible to the public Quite interesting to go into the bowels of Table Mountain for a totally different experience.

Where is it?

That sounds really interesting. Where is the entrance to the mine?
